Religious school fire: Johor Sultan saddened by loss of lives
PETALING JAYA: Johor Ruler Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar has expressed his deepest condolences to the families of victims who perished in a fire at Darul Quran Ittifaqiyah tahfiz.
A pre-dawn fire broke out at the religious school in Jalan Datuk Keramat on Thursday, killing 21 students and two teachers.
âI am shocked and deeply saddened by the tragic loss of lives," Sultan Ibrahim said in a statement on Facebook.
"I pray Allah will give the families strength and patience to grief the loss of their loved ones,â he added.
The Sultan of Johor ordered the Fire and Rescue Department to take immediate action to identify schools exposed to the risk of fire in the state.
He stressed that the safety checks must cover madrasah, tuition centres, boarding schools and primary and secondary schools.
âAll building by-laws must be strictly complied with. Local authorities must take action to close down any premises found operating illegally," said Sultan Ibrahim.
âIt is especially important that school buildings, including privately run tahfiz schools, meet full safety standards,â he said, adding that they must have proper operating licences or risk being shut down immediately.
His said all concerned must take safety seriously to ensure a tragedy like this does not occur in Johor.Related NewsSource: Google News
