Religious school fire: Statement taken from 13 cops over leaked info

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have recorded the statement of 13 of its personnel over the leaked information on the Darul Quran Ittifaqiyah tahfiz fire tragedy.

City CID chief Senior Asst Comm Rusdi Mohd Isa confirmed on Sunday night that an investigation was started on Saturday following the leak.

He also said that the investigation was being carried out under Section 203A of the Penal Code for disclosure of information and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

After information on the case went viral on social media, an urge nt press conference was held on Saturday by City police chief Comm Datuk Amar Singh Ishar Singh who announced that seven teenagers, aged 11 to 18, were remanded for a week.

He said the fire was believed to be arson and an act of revenge over an exchange of insults between tahfiz students and several outsiders.

Also, six of the suspects tested positive for drugs.

He also urged people to stop spreading information about the case on social media as it would affect the investigation and warned that action could be taken against those who spread the information.

Meanwhile, Bernama reported that three tahfiz centre students who received treatment at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL) were discharged on Saturday night.

HKL director Datuk Dr Zaininah Mohd Zain said they were discharged after their conditions had stabilised.

It was reported that the three would be given follow-up treatment for trauma over the incident.

Dr Zaininah added that four more who were injured in the incident were still being treated at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

She said visitors including family members were not allowed to visit the victims at the ICU to avoid infection.
