Housewife conned of over RM800,000 for herbal tree
Woman gives cash and valuables to two Chinese nationals for a tree they claimed could cure every disease.
IPOH: A housewife lost about RM855,000 to two Chinese nationals who conned her into believing that they had a herbal tree which could cure every disease.
Ipoh District Police chief ACP Mohd Ali Tamby said the 65-year-old victim lodged a police report yesterday claiming she was put under a spell and cheated of her money and valuables.
According to the victim, she was at the Menglembu market around 10am on Nov 28 when she overheard two women talking about a herbal tree that could cure all diseases.
âThe housewife was interested and the women and two of their friends took her in their car to see the tree.
âThe victim was told by the women that she had a chronic disease which must be treated immediately before it spread to other members of her family,â Ali said in a statement here today.
Ali said as a condition to treat the disease, the housewife must surrender her valuables to the women.
âThe victim gave them cash and foreign currency amounting to RM195,000; two Rolex watches worth about RM60,000 as well as gold jewellery worth RM600,000.
âShe handed the cash and valuables worth about RM855,000 to the women in front of Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina Wan Hwa 2, Menglembu,â he said.
Ali said after handing over the valuables, the victim was given a black plastic bag with an instruction that she could only open it after one month.
âThe victim felt something was amiss and opened the plastic bag yesterday; she found it only contained fruits and fruit juice and made a police report,â he said.
He said there were no witnesses when the victim handed over the valuables and she also had no id ea about the model of the car or its registration number, and only knew that the culprits were Chinese nationals driving a silver-coloured vehicle.
