Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam said the case of two garbage collectors falling ill on Saturday after consuming the instant white coffee given to them by a colleague reinforced suspicions further.

“None of the people who were affected actually purchased the coffee sachets from shops. It was either given to them by individuals or in this case found in a garbage can,” he said after launching the Cancer and Health Awareness Week at the Temple of Fine Arts.

As to whether Malaysia would follow Singapore’s lead in banning the sale of the product, Dr Subramaniam insisted concrete evidence must be found first.

“Had the five people displayed the symptoms after buying it off the racks, we would have removed it by now. And our examinations of the manufacturer’s factory revealed nothing untoward.

“Nonetheless, we are also continuing our own investigations to see if there is any other way the manufacturing process for the c offee sachets may have contributed to this. I have also instructed for random samplings to be done, to see if this happens to show up again,” he said.

Two garbage collectors were sent to Penang Hospital after experiencing dizziness, blurred vision and vomiting within minutes of consuming the coffee, after their Bangladeshi co-worker came across it.

This followed separate incidents on January 27 and 30, where five others were warded in the same hospital after displaying similar symptoms. Police have since discovered the sachets in question had been opened and resealed, with a green substance found within.
