One missing, two hurt after drilling vessel fire in Miri

MIRI, April 17 â" Two crew members were injured while another crew member was still missing after the drilling vessel, MV Geos caught fire in Kuala Baram waters here at 3.15am today.
Miri District 13 Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) director Capt Maritime Md Fauzi Othman said the two injured crew members were second engineers Muhammad Hafiz Ismail, 36, who sustained 20 per cent burns and Khairul Isma Ismail, 35, who was injured on his forehead, lips and face.
âBoth victims were given early treatment and at 7.40 am they were brought to the Miri Ho spital for further treatment,â he told a media conference here today.
Fauzi said the identity of the missing crew member could not be disclosed at the moment and search and rescue efforts were still ongoing.
âThere were 39 crew members on board the vessel during the incident, including five Indonesian nationals and a Thai national with 38 survivors and one still missing,â he said.
He said during the incident, the vessel which was registered under the Kuala Lumpr based AGEO Marine Sdn Bhd was five nautical miles or 10 km from Kuala Baram.
âThe fire was completely extinguished by 8 am,â he said, adding that Miri MMEA had deployed two assets for the search and rescue operation for the missing crew man.
Meanwhile Petronas Media Engagement Department, Group Strategic Communications, in a brief statement, said that it has activated the emergency response team and working closely with the relevant authorities to contain the incident an d keep the situation under control.
