Sarawak DAP to contest four seats in central region

SIBU: There was no surprise when three incumbents and a debutant were named as DAP candidates for the four seats in the central region.

At the 40th anniversary celebration dinner on Sunday, Sarawak DAP chairman Chong Cheng Jen announced that Alice Lau would defend her Lanang seat together with Oscar Ling (Sibu), and Wong Lin Biu (Sarikei).

Paren Nyawi, 37, who lost to Ambrose Bikau Enturan in the 2016 state election by 3,053 votes, was picked by his party to stand in the Kapit seat.

Oscar won the 2013 general election by a majority votes of 2,841 in a three-cornered fight. He polled 26,808 votes, against 23,967 votes for Barisan’s Vincent Lau Lee Ming and 203 for Independent Narawi Haron.

Lau was a giant killer when she dethroned four-term MP Tiong Thai King in the 2013 election with a big majority of 8,630 votes. She amassed 26,613 votes while Tiong receive d 17,983 votes in a straight fight.

Lin Biu, meanwhile, defeated Ding Kuong Hiing of SUPP by a simple majority of 505 votes.

Chong, in assessing the chances of the four, felt that they would not have it easy, especially in retaining Sarikei seat.

On the Sibu seat, he was optimistic for a win if the turnout is good especially from those working outstation.

“There are locals residing overseas such as those in New Zealand, Singapore and Australia who would be back to vote.

“If their number is small, then it would be difficult for us to win,” he added.

As for the Lanang seat, he said Lau, wit h her good record in Parliament, deserved to be given the same support as in the last general election.

Paren said he had quit his accounting job in Kuala Lumpur two years ago to concentrate on the elections.

State PKR chairman Baru Bian, meanwhile, said his party would give full support to the four candidates in GE14, adding that PKR would contest two seats â€"Kanowit and Mukah â€" in the central region.
