Mahathir wants EC to reveal the latest electoral roll
The PH chairman says there were a lot of problems with the previous register and the opposition coalition needs the latest roll to make comparisons.
PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad has urged the Election Commission (EC) to reveal the latest electoral register.
He said there were several issues regarding the register that needed clarification.
âThere were a lot of problems with the previous roll, where voters were listed at addresses that did not exist, incomplete addresses, or addresses of voters who were total strangers to each other but listed as living in one house.
âThere were all kinds of flaws in the previous roll. In order to avoid these flaws from recurring in this coming general election, we hope the EC is able to release the latest roll for us to make comparisons.
âPreviously, the roll was available to political parties, but this time around, the EC is refusing to release it.
âThis is something very unusual. Previously, if we had requested for the latest roll, we could obtain it with a fee,â he told a press conference at the PPBM headquarters today.
Mahathir, who is also PPBM chairman and the PH prime minister candidate, also questioned the Registrar of Societies (RoS) over its non-response to the PHâs application to register the coalitionâs logo.
âUntil now we have not received an answer from them. We need to start our election campaign soon, we canât wait.
âThe problem is they have not even acknowledged our application. We have been waiting and have even sent reminders, but to no avail. It is as if this application did not happen.
âPreviously, we tried to meet with RoS, but according to their written reply, there were some problems with PPBM and DAP.
âWe have rectified the problems, but we donât understand what seems to be the problem now,â he said.
PPBM held its inaugural annual general meeting (AGM) last December after being threatened with deregistration by the RoS.
In DAPâs case, it held fresh elections in November for its central executive committee after the RoS ruled the previous committee was not voted in legally.
Mahathir said the attitude of the RoS would affect votersâ right to elect the leader of their choice in the coming general election.
He also said PH was keen to invite foreign observers to monitor the election, but this could only happen with the cooperation of the EC.
