Hung assembly in Sabah, Star to be kingmaker

GE14 | Despite claims that Parti Warisan Sabah and its electoral partners DAP and PKR had won Sabah, official results from the Election Commission have shown that the pact is tied with BN.

The EC announced that BN won 29 of the 60 seats in the state assembly, while Warisan won 21, PKR two, and DAP six seats respectively.

Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (Star), meanwhile, won two state seats - Tambunan and Bingkor - which means that the party is now the kingmaker in the state. It also won the Keningau parliamentary seat.

It is believed that the party's president, Jeffrey Kitingan, is being sought by both BN and the electoral part consisting of Warisan, DAP and PKR.

The two seats by Star will be enough for either BN or Warisan-DAP-PKR to form a simple majority state government.

Warisan party insiders said a press conference sc heduled for 9am today is expected to be jointly held with Jeffrey.

As at 4.30am today, the crowd at Warisan president Mohd Shafie Apdal's house is yet to disperse.

The party's supporters had gathered there to await the election results, which were particularly late in the case of Sabah. Official results only came in at 4.30am.

During a press conference earlier in the day, Shafie had accused EC officials of refusing to sign Form 14, and claimed that caretaker Sabah chief minister Musa Aman had lost in Sungai Sibuga. Results from the EC, however, declared that Musa had retained the seat.

Apart from the 21 state seats won by Warisan, the fledgling party also won eight parliamentary seats. The party had contested in 17 parliamentary and 45 state seats.

Kedah and Perak are also facing the same conundrum as Sabah.

When asked about the fate of these states, deputy EC chairperson Othman Mahmood said it was up to the polit ical parties involved to come to a decision.

"Our responsibility is just to announce the results," he said.
