Putrajaya okays live World Cup matches on RTM

The announcement fulfills Pakatan Harapan's election pledge.

PUTRAJAYA: World Cup matches this year will be telecast live on Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM), Putrajaya announced today, fulfilling Pakatan Harapan’s election manifesto to carry live broadcasts of the matches for free.

Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo said the government would look for ways to absorb the costs.

“But this is something that is a one-off, once in four years,” he said after attending the Cabinet’s weekly meeting today.

He said more details on the costs will be made available later.

Gobind had previously said that airing the World Cup matches live was one way for RTM to win back viewers.

Prior to this, Malaysians watched the World Cup through satell ite pay television service, Astro.

The World Cup this year is hosted by Russia, and begins on June 14.
