PETALING JAYA: Congratulatory messages are starting to pour in from governments around the world as they anticipate the formation of a new administration here. On Facebook, Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said Singapore is closely following the situation in Malaysia as the island-republic has a vested interest in its neighbour's stability and prosperity. “We look forward to developing an equally constructive relationship with the next Malaysian government, and to work with it to take our bilateral ties forward and benefit both our peoples,” Lee said. The US State Department congratulated Malaysia on its participation in a hard-fought campaign. “We fully expect all institutions will carry out their functions and duties to produce and implement official results in accordance with the federal constitution and the will of the people,” said spokesperson Heather Nauert. Meanwhile, the European Union urged for the results of the general election on Wednesday to be respected. “The Malaysian people have voted for peaceful change. The European Union expects the result to be respected, beginning with a smooth and orderly transfer of power, in line with the Malaysian Constitution,” said a EU Foreign Affairs & Security Policy spokesperson. “We look forward to working with the future government in Malaysia to further strengthen our relations for the benefit of all Malaysian and European citizens”.
