PUTRAJAYA: The World Cup 2018 matches that would be shown live on Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) are estimated to cost about RM40 million.
Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo said the finance ministry would announce more details tomorrow.
âWe are of course looking to reduce the cost and there will be plans to bring in sponsors and advertisers.
âThese, however, are still in the midst of negotiations, but we are looking to finalise the matter as soon as possible as we have les s than a few weeks,â he said at his ministry.
Gobind said a total of 41 matches would be aired, of which 27 would be shown live.
When asked if there were plans to telecast other major sporting events, Gobind said as of now, the decision applied only to the World Cup 2018.
The decision to telecast the World Cup matches live was announced at the post-Cabinet meeting earlier, fulfilling Pakatan Harapanâs election manifesto to carry live broadcast of the matches for free.
Gobind had previously said that airing the World Cup matches live was one of the ways for RTM to win back viewers.
Prior to this, Malaysians could only watch the World Cup through satellite pay television service, Astro.
The World Cup this year is hosted by Russia and will take place at 12 venues. It kicks off on June 14.
