Ex-UN chief Kofi Annan congratulates Maria Chin

PETALING JAYA: Former United Nations secretary-general Kofi Annan (pic) has congratulated Petaling Jaya MP Maria Chin Abdullah on her achievement at the polls in GE14.
The 2001 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, in a letter addressed to Maria, also praised her for playing a part in "preparing the ground" for Malaysia's historic transition.
"Your bold and spirited defence of democracy in the face of increasing authoritarian drift, of which your own arrest was symptomatic, highlight ed the strength of your character," said Annan in a statement on May 31.
"Malaysia can count itself fortunate to have MPs of your calibre to serve the root and branch reform process it is about to undertake," he added.
Annan also spoke about the cooperation between Bersih and the Kofi Annan Foundation towards promoting democratic reform in Malaysia.
"I hope that our engagement played a useful role in the process that led to this result," he said.
In March, Maria stepped down as Bersih 2.0 chairman to enter politics.
Annan said that the recent Malaysian election has sent a "signal of hope" across the world, proving that democratic change is possible.
He then signs off his letter with: "Please accept my warm regards and best wishes."
Malaysia's 14th General Election, dubbed the "mother of all elections", saw Pakatan Harapan winning 113 out of the 222 parliamentary seats and for ming a new government with a simple majority.
